Meet our 2010 STAR of the Year

STAR of the Year nominees listen as CEO Mark Newton prepares to announce the winner.

In front of a packed auditorium of SCH employees and supporters, David Cazares (IS) was named the 2010 STAR employee of the Year on August 26.

“David is the face and voice of IS,” said Lisa Nemec (IS) to the crowd after CEO Mark Newton announced David as the winner. “I think just about everyone in this room has talked to David at some point.”

Nemec and Newton recognized David for his commitment to customer service and for the assistance he has given to countless SCH employees.

One such employee nominated David for the award, writing: “I had been working on a large project involving multiple databases and I needed some assistance. I called David and he was extremely helpful, spending much time and energy making sure that everything worked properly. In addition to being helpful, he was very patient and polite — especially considering that I am not the most technologically-savvy person! I commend David for his talent, patience and determination.”

David has worked in the hospital for 10 years and 10 months, which IS staff members joked was a very long time in their ever-evolving field and such a demanding position. In a brief speech after being named the winner, David said that he enjoys helping employees and thanked the entire IS team for their assistance and support.

David comes from a family committed to compassionate care. He has six family members who currently or formerly work for the hospital, including his sisters Esther Serrano, RN (MSO OB/Midwifery) and Ruth Cazares (Pathology), and his nieces Olivia Serrano (MSO), Maryanne Cazares (Operator/Laboratory), Cynthia Cazares (formerly of Dr. James McCormick’s office) and Victoria Serrano (Galter LifeCenter Welcome Desk). Many were present at the STAR awards and shared how proud they are of David.

And they are not alone in their commitment to SCH. The other nominees for the STAR of the Year each won STAR of the month throughout the past year. They are:

  • Walten Baba, MD (Medical Education) for his work with medical students and residents.
  • Dolores Harold, RN (7 East) for her exceptional, compassionate patient care.
  • Penny Berry (Courtesy Car) for her patience and good will when coordinating medical appointments for patients.
  • Maribeth Javier, RN, (Obstetrics) for her enthusiasm and efficiency.
  • Josephine Matthews, RN (5 South) for helping a patient’s family with a tough hospice decision.
  • Elizabeth Giese (Medical Library) for her excellent work as the hospital’s librarian.
  • Dina Pittis (Environmental Services) for giving hand-made scarves and gloves to hospital volunteers.
  • Brenda Hale (Laboratory) for her gentle touch when drawing patient’s blood.
  • Luis Santos (Public Safety) for helping a family as they went into labor and arrived at the hospital.

Congratulations to David and all of our STARs from this year.
