Local students embrace The science of feeling better philosophy
Students from local elementary and middle schools studied SCH's healing philosophy - The science of feeling better - then created their own healing elements. Their artwork will be on display at SCH throughout the summer.

Budlong School students created their own "Healing Elements" in art class after learning about The science of feeling better philosophy in place at SCH.

Many of the students had not previously had an opportunity to view eachother's healing elements.
After viewing their art work in the hospital Auditorium, the students toured the hospital's Tunnel to learn more about The science of feeling better at SCH.
Swedish Covenant Hospital’s tagline — The science of feeling better — represents our hospital’s unique view on health care which encompasses numerous elements of healing including technology, research, information, kindness, food, light, nature, art, touch and family.
You may have noticed in recent hospital marketing campaigns, or on the California Avenue Bridge, that the hospital has visually represented these elements by creating what looks like a periodic table from chemistry class — but with a focus on our philosophy about healing.
And as it turns out, young members of our community are embracing this same philosophy.
This spring, more than 100 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from local schools, including Budlong Elementary School and Haugan Middle School, created their own healing elements as a way to represent the things in their own lives that contribute to wellness.
Their assignment was to talk to their families about what ideas and actions come to mind when they think of healing in their homes. The students were then asked to create an element representing one of their ideas. Examples of the students’ elements include “Encouragement” to symbolize a need for positive feedback; “Togetherness” to represent family dinners; and “Fitness” to encourage parents and siblings to stay in shape.
The students’ teachers then compiled their elements and put them together to form displays similar to the hospital’s periodic table of healing elements.
These healing periodic tables and individual healing elements, made entirely of student art work, are now part of a summer-long, rotating exhibit at Swedish Covenant Hospital. Every few weeks different healing elements will be posted.
To kick-off the display, on Thursday, May 27, more than 50 8th graders from Budlong Elementary School visited Swedish Covenant Hospital to view their art work. Many students had not yet seen the work of their classmates, so while viewing the healing periodic tables, many began talking to each other about all the ways wellness plays into their family lives.
The students’ art work is currently on display in the hospital Auditorium. It will soon move to the walls of the hospital Tunnel connecting AP to the Main Building. This exhibit is open to all hospital employees, patients and visitors for viewing over the next several months. Please stop by and take a look.
