Students from local elementary and middle schools studied SCH's healing philosophy - The science of feeling better - then created their own healing elements. Their artwork will be on display at SCH throughout the summer.

Home Health researches ways to improve patient quality of life

In an effort to better understand the effects a change in health status has on a Home Health Care patient’s quality of life, nurses from SCH and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) are conducting a clinical study on patients who move from acute care to chronic care.

Lead by Suk Jung Han, PhD, RN, of UIC, and Sharmila Rao, RN of SCH, the study will be completed at our hospital. To collect data, SCH nurses administer a 30-minute survey to a Home Health Care patient at two separate times: when they start to receive care, and 60 days later or at their discharge (whichever comes first). The survey asks patients to share their perceptions of their health status, living situation, family life and caregivers, among other details.

Once the results are processed, they will be compared to the results of an identical study Han is conducting at a hospital in Korea.

SCH nurses began collecting data in September 2008 and expect to finish by August 2009. They will present their findings in 2010. SCH nurse researchers include Conchita Penaranda, RN; Sun Jang, RN; Leeann Palmer, RN; and Suzanne Dunne, RN, all of Home Health Care.
