SCH welcomes new era of robotic surgery

The use of the da Vinci Si HD has launched a new Robotics Surgery program at Swedish Covenant Hospital. Several Swedish Covenant Hospital surgeons and many other members of the OR staff have completed extensive training on the da Vinci Si HD robotic surgery system at the beginning of the year.

The da Vinci Si HD robot translates the surgeon’s natural hand movements into precise movement of small instruments positioned inside the patient's body.

Patient benefits

This technology allows SCH surgeons, trained in robotic surgery, to make smaller, more precise incisions, which means better outcomes for patients through reductions in trauma, blood loss, risk of infection, post-operative pain and average length of stay. It is the safest, most effective treatment option available to surgical patients.

Our surgeons

The da Vinci Si HD Surgical System can be used in a wide variety of surgical procedures, including:

• Cystectomy
• Gastric bypass surgery
• Heller myotomy
• Hysterectomy, myomectomy and sacrocolpopexy
• Lower anterior resection
• Partial and full nephrectomy
• Radical prostatectomy
• Ureteral reimplantation

The following surgeons have experience in robotic surgery and have privileges on the da Vinci Si HD at Swedish
Covenant Hospital.

Steven Kim, M.D. (General Surgery)
Morteza Dini, M.D. (Gynecology)
Joseph Maurice, M.D. (Gynecology)
Alvaro Mercado, M.D. (Gynecology)
Allen Chernoff, M.D. (Urology)
Spencer Land, M.D. (Urology)
Matthew Meadows, M.D. (Urology)
Alan Sadah, M.D. (Urology)
Balakrishna Sundar, M.D. (Urology)
Michael Young, M.D. (Urology)

Several other Swedish Covenant Hospital physicians are currently training to use this technology as well. For more information about our robotically-trained physicians, please visit their profile page by clicking here.

The robot at SCH

To kick off this new era of robotic surgery at SCH, hospital employees and visitors were treated to an all-day, hands-on demonstration of how the da Vinci Si robotic surgery system works. Following the Nov. 24 arrival and installation of the technology, members of the Surgical staff met for a breakfast presentation on its capabilities by Dr. Joseph Maurice, an experienced gynecologic robotic surgeon and new addition to our medical staff.

SCH’s new Robotic Surgery program is expected to produce growth in reputation, patient volumes and revenues that are essential to helping us achieve our vision to excel as the leading independent hospital in Chicago.
